91 16 the inner arti st Everyone spends their lifetime creatively responding to exper- ience at some level. If we make the shift to knowingly approach- ing life as art, if we free ourselves of any lingering intellectual tyranny and realise that our own internal, creative voice is a positive evolutionary force, we stand to benefit not only our- selves but civilisation as a whole, a task that is becoming increas- ingly urgent. In this sense we can all aspire to becoming artists, and it is worth examining what qualities would facilitate our participation. I touched upon the visionary capacity earlier, but another example of how it impacts on creativity is worth a brief diversion: an imaginary car journey through majestic mountainous land- scape. As you drive, each turn provides a new, exciting, inspiring vista. If your visionary capacity is not trained or focused, you will remember the trip as pleasant, magnificent even, but it will be a passing pleasure, treated in much the same way as the casual visitor bouncing off a painting in a museum. A visual artist driving the same route would be seeking patterns in cliffs and peaks, absorbing how light and shadow fall across the terrain, how precisely-defined foreground sharpness and high contrast
