So none of the aesthetic power of ancient art is lost to us. We feel it still when approach- ing a religious masterpiece, where a transcendent reality has inspired an artist to profound expression beyond the simple message of the subject matter. What is changing in the West is our ideas and definitions of that transcendent reality, and its perception through the exponentially greater freedom of ex- pression of today’s artists.
