When required for whatever purpose, a more convincingly ‘real’ perspective could be readily approx- imated, even without the rigidity of a scientific formula such as linear perspective. And we should remember that western pictorial perspective itself fails to show the curves of sight: the fisheye-lens quality of our peripheral vision; the curvature of the horizon; the whooshing of the world seen in movement. The straight horizon, vanishing points, straight lines, static observer’s position: all are special cases; a contrivance, not a truth.
